How to choose a dog winter coat

September 28, 2026 · 3 min · Creature & Kin editorial · Store editorial. Not a veterinarian.

A dog in a wool coat on a snowy street

A dog winter coat covers the back and closes around the chest. That is the whole product. It is not a temperature rating, not a waterproof grade, and not a reason to stay out longer than the dog is comfortable. Salt, slush, and the rinse at the door are on winter walking with a dog in Canada. This page is only how to pick the coat.

When a coat is the wrong object

Paw balm and eye rinse are not sold here. Paw boots are a separate product type; a boot page is still not a lab rating. A towel dries the dog after the walk. A harness or a collar is what the leash clips to. If the question is “what do we need for a Canadian January sidewalk,” start with the walking guide, then come back here only if a coat is actually on the list.

What to measure

Use a soft tape, in centimetres, with the dog standing on the floor.

  • Chest: the widest part, just behind the front legs. Snug, not tight. This is the number that decides most coats.
  • Back: withers to the base of the tail. A coat that stops halfway down the ribs leaves the lower back bare. A coat that runs past the tail gets soiled and pulls.
  • Neck: where a collar already sits. Two fingers under the tape.

The same three numbers are on how to measure a dog for a harness. Weight in kilograms is a check, not a size.

There is no single size chart

Coats in the winter collection carry their own labels. You will see combinations such as XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, and on some coats 3XL or 4XL. Those words are not one centimetre table shared by every coat. A “medium” on one coat is not a promise about the next coat. Open the product and use only the sizes that page lists. If the page does not print centimetres, Creature & Kin does not invent them. If you land on the line between two labels, take the larger one. A tight coat cuts the armpit and the dog refuses it.

Fit in the house, before the sidewalk

Put the coat on inside. The dog should walk a few steps, sit, and turn. The chest closure should meet without a gap you can see daylight through, and without stacking so much fabric that the front legs cannot reach. Two fingers at the chest. The back panel should end near the tail base, not mid-rib and not on the tail. Colour is the colour that product lists. A colour is not warmth.

We do not claim waterproof, windproof, insulated, or a minus-degree limit for any coat. If a product page does not say it, it is not a feature.

Where to shop

All of these coats sit in winter, not under a city and not under a breed. Pair the coat with a harness or collar you already trust, and a leash you can hold with gloves. Returns on unopened goods are 14 days if you write first. Shipping is inside Canada.
