Guests, counters, and the dog on Thanksgiving Monday

October 12, 2026 · 6 min

Set dining table with a dog resting on a bed in the next room

On Thanksgiving Monday the useful work is access: plates, counters, and trash the dog cannot reach, and guests who have been told not to feed. It is not a holiday tasting menu.

Canadian Thanksgiving Monday in 2026 is 12 October. This note is house management for a dog in a room where people are cooking and sitting down. Creature & Kin will not publish a list of “safe” table foods, a turkey recipe for dogs, or a diagnosis. If the dog eats something they should not have, call a veterinarian or a poison line. Do not wait on a shop article.

The house, not the plate

A full kitchen on a holiday Monday is a series of low surfaces: chopping boards, roasting pans on a cooling rack, plates on laps, bags on the floor by the door. The dog does not need a new rule about manners as much as they need fewer chances. Close the kitchen if you can cook with the door shut. If you cannot, put the dog in a room they already rest in, with water and a chew they already know, until plates are on the table and the counters are wiped.

A baby gate is a tool if the dog already respects it. A new gate on a noisy Monday is another object to knock over. A lead to your chair is uglier and more reliable when the house is full of cousins who leave doors open.

The dog’s own meal stays in its usual place, at its usual time, in their usual food. Moving the bowl into the dining room “so they feel included” puts a hungry face next to passing plates. Placement on a busy day is a house problem; bowl materials are not this article. If you need that split, it lives on home bowl or travel bowl.

Tell the table before the first plate

Say it once, to the group, before anyone sits: please do not feed the dog, from the table or from a finger in the kitchen. Children hear “a little bit” as permission. Guests who “have a dog at home” will still offer skin and fat because it feels kind. You can be brief and specific. You do not need a speech about nutrition.

If someone is already feeding when you notice, take the dog out of the room and say it again. Do not invent a compromise plate “just this once.” That is how the next guest copies the first.

Ask one person who is not cooking to be the door person: coats, deliveries, the cousin who goes out for a cigarette. A dog at an open front door during a houseful is a different problem from food, and it happens on the same afternoon.

Counters, bags, and the bin

Cooling meat on a stove is still a counter in dog geometry. So is a platter on a coffee table, a plate on a low ottoman, and a stack of serving bowls on a dining chair. If it is below the dog’s standing nose, it is available. Wash or put away before you sit down to eat. Do not “leave it for later” in a house with a dog who has been smelling it for two hours.

Grocery bags and takeout bags on the floor are a second table. Onions, grapes, and bakery boxes travel in those bags. Put them on a counter the dog cannot use, or in a closed pantry, as soon as they come through the door.

Trash is the third kitchen. Bones, skin, onion ends, and sweetener wrappers go in a bin with a lid that stays closed, preferably behind a door. A bag tied on a cupboard handle is an invitation. If you are a guest in someone else’s house, ask where the bin lives and whether the dog can open it. Take a walk with the dog while the host deals with the carcass if that is the only quiet option.

Known people-food hazards — not a menu

This is not a list of what to serve a dog. It is a short pointer to foods that are widely treated as dangerous if eaten, so you know why the bin and the guests matter. The ASPCA maintains a page on people foods to avoid. Among the items they discuss are grapes and raisins, onion and garlic, xylitol (a sweetener found in some gums, mints, and sugar-free foods), chocolate, and cooked bones as a hazard. Source: ASPCA, People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets.

We are not adding portions, “a little is fine,” or substitutions. We are not telling you to share white meat. If you want a longer inventory, read that ASPCA page. A feeding plan for your dog is a veterinarian, not a journal note.

Alcohol, unattended drinks, and food dropped under the table are the same access problem. Wipe the floor before you relax.

If something was eaten

Call a veterinarian or a poison line. Tell them what you think was eaten, about how much, and when, if you know. Do not wait to “see how they are.” Do not induce anything because a website said to. This page will not describe symptoms and will not tell you what happens next. That is the point of the phone call.

If you do not have a regular clinic, use the emergency number you already keep on the fridge, or the nearest emergency hospital your veterinarian has named. A poison line is for ingestion questions; it is not a substitute for care if the dog is in distress.

Creature & Kin does not diagnose. We do not publish home treatment.

A room that is not the dining room

A bed the dog already uses, in a room with the door closed or a gate they know, is a complete holiday plan for many dogs. Water in that room. A chew they already have. You check them. They do not need to watch every plate.

If the dog cannot settle behind a door, they can be on a lead beside the person who will not feed them. That is less pretty than a greeting-card scene and more honest than a dog circling twelve laps.

A host house is harder. Bring the bed. Ask for a room. If there is no room, the lead stays on when food is out. Visiting habits more generally are a different piece of work than this Monday; the food rule does not change.

After people leave

Walk the dog. Check the floor, the couch cushions, and the bags by the door. Tie the trash and take it out. Wash the roasting pan before you sit down with a drink. The dog’s evening meal is still their food, in their bowl, in Home territory, not a plate of what is left.

If the day was loud and the dog is still wound, a defined rest is enough. Do not invent a second dinner as an apology.
