How to choose a dog leash
September 28, 2026 · 2 min · Creature & Kin editorial · Store editorial. Not a veterinarian.

A leash is the line between your hand and the dog. It is not the object that fits the chest. That fit is collar or harness. Leashes in this shop are in leashes, inside walk.
Clip it where a ring already is
The leash ends in a clip. The collar or the harness has a ring. Those two meet. If the product you are holding does not show a ring, do not assume one is hiding in the photo. A coat is not a clip point unless that coat’s page says the leash attaches there. Most coats do not.
Length is per leash
We do not publish one length for every leash. If the page you are reading prints a length, that is the number. If it does not, we do not guess metres. A shorter line is easier beside traffic because the dog stays in the span of your arm. A longer line gives room to sniff and tangles more on a narrow trail. That is how you handle the leash you bought. It is not two certified categories hiding under one name.
Hands, gloves, and the other hand
In winter you will hold the leash with gloves. A handle you cannot close a fist around is the wrong handle for that walk, whatever the photo shows. The walking guide is winter walking with a dog in Canada. The leash does not rinse salt. You do, at the door.
What a leash will not fix
A leash does not stop pulling by itself. Changing from a collar to a harness changes where the force lands. It still is not a lesson. If you need the chest measurement, use the harness measurements before you buy a harness to go with the leash.
A leash you already use is information. If the clip on the new one does not meet the ring on your harness, they will not connect. Compare the clip in the photos to the ring you have. If the page does not show the clip clearly, do not assume it matches. Harnesses and collars stay in their own collections; the leash does not replace them.
